Personalised History tuition focused on understanding, examination skills and better results.
IGCSE . GCSE . AS & A Level
Every student is different. Some need help filling gaps in their historical knowledge. Others understand the content but struggle to turn that knowledge into effective examination answers.
My role is to identify what each student needs and provide focused, individual support to help them improve.
What can we work on?
Revision & Subject Knowledge
We can revisit difficult topics, consolidate existing knowledge and identify gaps that may be affecting examination performance.
Essay Writing
Students learn how to understand exactly what a question is asking, plan an effective response, develop an argument and use relevant historical evidence.
Source Analysis
We work on how to analyse historical sources, consider their content and provenance, and use them effectively within examination answers.
Examination Technique
Students learn how to approach different types of examination questions and how to structure their responses effectively within the available time.
Past Papers
Past examination questions provide an opportunity to practise skills, identify weaknesses and build confidence in applying them independently.
Confidence
Good examination performance is not only about knowledge. Students need to have confidence in their ability to approach unfamiliar questions and make decisions under examination conditions.
How I teach
1. Identify
We begin by finding out where the student is currently working and identifying their strengths and areas for development.
This might involve discussing their previous work, looking at examination answers or working through a particular question together.
2. Understand
We explore what the examination question is asking and what makes an effective answer.
Students are encouraged to understand why an answer is successful rather than simply being given a model answer to copy.
3. Improve
We work together to improve specific skills — perhaps developing an argument, selecting evidence, analysing a source or structuring an essay.
4. Practise
Students then apply these skills to new questions.
This gives them the opportunity to practise independently and see whether they can transfer what they have learned.
5. Build confidence
The ultimate aim is for students to become increasingly confident and independent in their own work.
Why work with an examiner?
As an experienced examiner and examination team leader, I have seen the difference between a student who knows their History and a student who can successfully demonstrate that knowledge in an examination.
I therefore place particular emphasis on how students communicate what they know.
A student may know the relevant facts but still lose marks because:
their answer does not address the question directly
their argument is unclear
evidence is included but not explained
they describe rather than analyse
paragraphs are not sufficiently developed
they do not reach a clear judgement
they misunderstand what the question is asking
These are skills that can be taught and improved.
